10 Structures that use Video Screens as Building Facades

As society progresses, our infrastructure increasingly integrates advanced technology. Building curtain walls and facades are being modernized with video screens, replacing traditional brick-and-mortar structures. This innovation can be seen all over the globe with mesmerizing views at iconic sites. This article will highlight 10 structures that use video screens as building facades.

  1. The Sphere – Las Vegas

The Sphere in Las Vegas is an architectural marvel, encompassing a vast 580,000 square feet of space. This venue, designed by Populous and costing $2.3 billion, opened in September 2023 and is known for its immersive video and audio capabilities. Its curtain wall is adorned with 1.23 million puck-shaped LEDs, designed to be visible even during the day. To accommodate the spherical shape of the façade, each pixel has a pitch of 225 mm, and the structure itself spans 500 feet in diameter. The curtain wall frame can expand by 3 inches on either side to maintain its structural integrity under the hot conditions of the Nevada summers. The stability of the sphere is further reinforced by 14 rings that evenly distribute lateral loads around the structure. The unique spherical shape features a wind-resistant shape akin to hurricane-resistant buildings. 1. M + – Hong Kong

The M+ building, a museum in Hong Kong, covers 77,909 square feet and stands 65.8 meters by 110 meters. It features 5,600 LEDs and was inaugurated in 2021. The façade features a modular terracotta cladding system, inspired by traditional Chinese roofs and crafted from a unique clay mixture in Italy. The panels, assembled in Shenzhen, serve both aesthetic and functional purposes, including sun-shading louvres. The harbor-facing facade serves as a digital exhibition platform, transforming into a display screen at night to showcase the museum’s programs. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the building includes 33 galleries, three cinema houses, and a roof garden.

  1. Allegiant Stadium – Las Vegas

To withstand inclement weather, many outdoor screens utilize alternative materials. Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas features a 27,600-square-foot Samsung LED mesh display, making it the largest outdoor display in professional football. The outdoor LED mesh display comprises 2,550 Samsung XPR080-S (P8.3) LED pixels. They include advanced heat dissipation mechanisms and IP66-rated cabinets for durability in various weather conditions, an essential feature to withstand the Nevada desert climate. Opened in 2020, the stadium is home to the Las Vegas Raiders and UNLV Rebels.

  1. New York Marriot Marquis – New York City

The New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square boasts a 25,610-square-foot digital LED screen, the largest and most technologically advanced in the area. This screen can display two different ads simultaneously and is supported by a secondary steel structure with vertical trusses and horizontal square tubes, ensuring the façade’s stability. This steel grid spans the entire front of the hotel’s east-facing facade, enhancing the visual impact of the display. The hotel, designed by John Portman & Associates, opened in 1985 and features 1,971 rooms and 101,000 square feet of meeting space.

  1. Burj Khalifa – Dubai

In Dubai, the Burj Khalifa’s exterior is adorned with LEDs covering a total area of 33,000 square meters. This massive screen requires 72 kilometers of cabling and 10,000 connectors to install on the world’s tallest tower. The LED display is engineered to withstand harsh weather conditions, ensuring its durability and functionality, particularly in the extreme climate of the United Arab Emirates. The Burj Khalifa, standing at 828 meters, is the tallest building in the world and includes residential, commercial, and hospitality spaces. 1. Palms Casino Resort – Las Vegas

The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas features a 21,488-square-foot LED mesh wall that stands 272 feet tall. Installed in 2019, this display covers the entire east-facing side of one of the resort’s towers. Like other mesh screens in the area, this design offers several advantages, including reduced weight load, transparency for room occupants, and lower wind resistance, making it both cost-effective and visually striking. The display is part of a $690 million renovation aimed at attracting a younger, upscale clientele.

  1. Mall Taman Anggrek – Indonesia

The Mall Taman Anggrek in Jakarta, Indonesia, is home to a 93,380-square-foot LED display. The installation required exposed structural steel framing, cantilevered up to 6 meters, to support the LED panels. The hollow tube mega frame system was designed to meet both strength and aesthetic criteria, ensuring the display’s stability and visual appeal. The mall, opened in 1996, is one of the largest in Southeast Asia and features over 500 stores.

  1. The Place – Beijing

The Place in Beijing features an 80,360-square-foot LED sky screen, the first of its kind in Asia and the third largest in the world. Designed by Jeremy Railton, the 250-meter-long and 30-meter-wide canopy cost 250 million yuan to build. The galleria beneath the constructed entirely of stone, creating a modern and elegant atmosphere while ensuring structural stability. The Place is a popular shopping and entertainment destination in Beijing’s Central Business District.

  1. Citigroup Tower – Shanghai

The Citigroup Tower in Shanghai features a 64,914-square-foot LED plasma screen on its western wall. Completed in 2005, this 42-story skyscraper stands as a modern landmark in the Luijiazui skyline. The building’s exterior is protected by Valspar’s Fluropon Classic II coating, which provides high resistance to weathering and UV rays. The tower serves as the headquarters for Citibank (China) Company Limited.

  1. Arena Cuidad de Mexico – Mexico City

The Arena Ciudad de Mexico, opened in 2012, features a 64,484-square-foot LED display. The display spans approximately 29 meters high by 209 meters wide and utilizes PXS-125 ProPixel LED stick elements. This technology ensures clear visibility from the front while maintaining transparency for those behind the display, creating a dynamic and engaging visual experience. The arena, located in Azcapotzalco, Mexico City, has a capacity of 22,300 spectators and hosts a variety of events, including concerts and sports.

Throughout the globe, buildings are being enhanced with technology on the interior and exterior. Innovative solutions like mesh screens and individual pixels enable video screens to thrive on building facades, even in the harshest of conditions. These advancements not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of structures but also offer functional benefits, such as improved durability and energy efficiency. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see even more creative and groundbreaking applications in curtain wall design.
