The upcoming Las Vegas Athletics Stadium represents a bold leap in Major League Baseball’s westward expansion. Designed by the visionary Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) in collaboration with HNTB, this 33,000-seat, fully enclosed stadium is rising on the historic Tropicana Resort site along the Las Vegas Strip. With a projected cost nearing $1.78 billion, the stadium is not just a venue—it’s a structural and architectural landmark, slated for completion by Opening Day 2028.
Our Contribution
Aquinas Engineering is proud to be playing a key structural engineering role in this landmark project. In close collaboration with our client, Kovach Enclosure Systems LLC, we are actively contributing to the design and engineering of the stadium’s metal panel systems. Our responsibilities include:
Design Consultation – Providing expert input to ensure structural integrity and aesthetic alignment.
Engineering Review – Conducting detailed evaluations to meet stringent safety and performance standards.
Fall Protection Anchor Analysis – Ensuring compliance with OSHA and project-specific safety requirements.
Structural Calculations for Profile Approval – Delivering precise calculations to support fabrication and installation.
Our team’s deep technical expertise and commitment to excellence are helping bring this ambitious vision to life.
Foundation Engineering: Supporting a Desert Giant
Constructing a stadium of this scale in the Mojave Desert presents unique geotechnical challenges. The foundation system is engineered to support 100,000–150,000 tons of structural load, with key components including:
- Deep Caisson Foundations: Large-diameter shafts drilled into the desert subgrade, reinforced with steel cages and concrete, providing both vertical and lateral resistance.
- Soil Stabilization and Grading: Extensive site prep was required to repurpose the Tropicana site, ensuring uniform load paths and mitigating long-term settlement.
- On-Site Rebar Cage Fabrication: Precision assembly of reinforcement cages enhances seismic resilience and ensures long-term durability under thermal cycling.
Structural Systems and Materials
The stadium’s superstructure blends steel framing and reinforced concrete, optimized for strength, constructability, and speed:
- Tower Crane Construction: Unlike Allegiant Stadium’s crawler cranes, this project utilizes tower cranes to navigate the tight urban footprint and accelerate vertical construction.
- Domed Roof System: A fully enclosed dome, engineered for thermal efficiency and acoustic performance, shields fans from the desert heat while enhancing the game-day atmosphere.
- Glass Curtain Wall: A 36,000-square-foot outfield glass wall introduces natural light and panoramic views of the Strip, while maintaining climate control.
Climate-Responsive and Sustainable Design
Las Vegas’ extreme climate demanded innovative architectural and structural responses:
- Enclosed Climate Control: The dome and façade work in tandem to reduce solar gain and maintain interior comfort.
- Under-Seat Cooling Systems: Integrated HVAC beneath seating areas ensures thermal comfort during peak summer months.
- Sustainable Materials: While final specs are pending, BIG’s design ethos suggests a focus on locally sourced and low-carbon materials, aligning with LEED goals.
Fan Experience Meets Structural Precision
The stadium’s design enhances fan engagement while maintaining structural integrity:
- Minimal Foul Territory: Brings fans closer to the action, requiring tight structural coordination to preserve sightlines and safety.
- Stacked Bullpens: Integrated beyond the left-field wall, these are structurally embedded to enhance visibility and acoustic performance.
- Largest MLB Jumbotron: An 18,000-square-foot video board suspended within the dome demands advanced load distribution and vibration control strategies.
Final Thoughts
The Las Vegas Athletics Stadium is more than a sports venue—it’s a case study in climate-adaptive engineering, urban site optimization, and fan-centric structural design. As structural engineers, we’re excited to see how this project sets a new benchmark for stadium construction in extreme environments. Aquinas Engineering is honored to be an integral part of this transformative project, delivering precision, innovation, and structural excellence at every stage.
Let’s build something extraordinary together.
