Our Contribution
Aquinas Engineering provided structural design and analysis for the curtain wall and glazing systems of The Ralston, a premier event center perched on the limestone cliffs of the San Antonio Zoo. In partnership with Binswanger Glass, our scope included anchor design, embed detailing, and structural coordination for operable façade elements, ensuring seamless integration with the architectural vision and the unique site conditions.
Structural and Spatial Design
The Ralston’s design demanded a balance between elegance and performance. The venue features a large ballroom with telescoping doors opening to panoramic views of the zoo and city skyline. Structural framing had to accommodate wide spans for unobstructed sightlines while supporting heavy glazing loads and operable systems. The integration of a commercial kitchen, boardroom, and bridal suite required precise coordination of structural elements to maintain spatial flexibility without compromising stability.
Curtain Wall
The building envelope incorporates Tubelite 400CW curtain wall and T14000 storefront systems, paired with Guardian SunGuard™ SNX 51/23 low-E glass for superior thermal performance and clarity. Our team analyzed wind loads, thermal movement, and anchorage requirements for these systems, ensuring compliance with performance criteria and LEED commissioning standards. Additionally, the inclusion of NanaWall folding doors introduced dynamic load conditions, requiring careful detailing to maintain structural integrity during operation.
Location-Specific Challenges
Constructed atop a historic limestone quarry, The Ralston presented unique geotechnical and structural challenges. Anchoring curtain wall systems into fractured rock demanded specialized embed design and load transfer strategies. Differential movement between the steel frame and stone substrate required flexible connections to mitigate stress concentrations. Furthermore, elevated exposure to wind and thermal gradients on the cliffside influenced our approach to bracing and thermal break detailing.
Conclusion
The Ralston exemplifies how structural engineering can elevate architectural ambition. By addressing complex site conditions and integrating advanced curtain wall systems, Aquinas Engineering delivered a solution that combines performance, aesthetics, and sustainability. This project reinforces our commitment to precision engineering and innovation in building envelope design.
